Woodford Equity Income

Elite Rated by FundCalibre

The reputable Neil Woodford manages this fund according to the same investment philosophy that saw his previous fund rise to the top of the 10 year rankings. His astute understanding of the macroeconomic environment and his preference for companies with transparent earnings, balance sheet strength and attractive valuations have seen him avoid many of the pitfalls that have beset other UK equity managers.

Company Description

Established in 2014, Neil Woodford assembled a team of analysts and portfolio managers working in a cutting-edge investment infrastructure. The company is built on principles of traditional values and integrity, focussing strictly on long-term performance consistency. He is supported by a team of fund managers with vast experience as well as contrasting skill sets.

Fund Manager

Neil was at Invesco Perpetual for 26 years where he managed the High Income and Income funds. During this time he achieved huge success and became the UK’s largest, by assets under management, equity fund manager. To the surprise of many in October 2013 he announced his decision to leave Invesco and start his own firm, called Woodford Asset Management. He is well known for avoiding technology stocks during the dot com crash and also being out of banks long before the financial crash in 2008.

The market may sometimes forget the importance of valuation and fundamentals in the short term, but over the long term, they are all that matter.

Neil Woodford - Fund Manager

The Investment Process

Neil takes a very long-term approach and seeks to identify cash-generative companies, with robust and transparent balance sheets which trade at attractive valuations. The typical holding period is around five years. Neil has an aptitude for identifying shifts in the macroeconomic environment and this has helped him avoid problematic sectors in the past.

Neil’s investment approach is defensive in nature as the companies in which he invests typically possess resilient and robust balance sheets. This emphasis makes the fund less risky than the FTSE 100. Cyclical and low quality businesses tend to be avoided.

Our Opinion

Neil Woodford is the most recognisable manager in the UK fund management space. His renowned ultra long-term investment approach has been tried and tested across a wide range of market conditions and has held up particularly well in tough markets. Neil was, and continues to be, the go to name in the equity income space.
