M&G Global Emerging Markets

Elite Rated by FundCalibre

This fund has been run by Matthew Vaight since its launch in 2009. It has a distinctive process designed to deliver consistent performance. Matthew maintains a focus on corporate governance, which is key when investing in emerging markets, and he seeks to outperform in a variety of market conditions.

Company Description

Founded in 1919, M&G Investments employs more than 1,500 people worldwide. The company, owned by Prudential plc, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange, focuses primarily on fixed interest and equities, but also invests in multi-asset and real estate. Its fund managers have an average tenure of 11 years, although many have been with the company for more than 20 years. Managers are given freedom to implement their own style on funds.

Fund Manager

An Oxford graduate, Matthew Vaight joined M&G in 1996. He was co-manager of the fund when it launched in February 2009, and became sole manager in 2012. In addition to managing this fund, he also heads up the M&G Asian fund.

The combination of long-term growth trends and improving corporate culture will make emerging markets an exciting asset class for years to come.

The Investment Process

Matthew looks in-depth at each company and likes to focus on those that are run for the benefit of the shareholder, but that he believes are not fully appreciated by other investors. He will then hold these undervalued stocks for the long term.

Investing in emerging markets inherently carries a large amount of risk. These nations tend to be more volatile than developed countries, but they also offer a greater potential for reward, especially when held for the long term.

Our Opinion

Matthew’s investment style and desire to find companies other managers have not separates this fund from the pack. We like his focus on corporate governance and, for investors optimistic about emerging markets’ long-term prospects, it is a worthy contender for a wider portfolio.
