Rathbone Strategic Growth Portfolio

Elite Rated by FundCalibre

Manager David Coombs and his team run this fund, which is one of the new breed of funds that target risk and then look to maximise returns. They follow a multi-asset approach and have outcome-focused investment objectives. They are unconstrained by benchmarks and sector peers.

Fund Manager

It may be a reaction to my Welsh heritage but herding is definitely avoided as the portfolio includes a high exposure to investment trusts and boutiques. Targeting risk and then maximising the returns ensures a disciplined allocation of capital.

The Investment Process

David and his team employ a forward-looking strategic asset allocation process, which focuses not only on returns, but also on risk and correlation of assets. They invest in three buckets of asset: Liquidity; Equity and Diversifiers. They then try to select what the team like to call ‘best of breed’ funds or passives to express that view.

This fund is targeting a risk of around two thirds of equites, so investors are shielded somewhat during market downturns. However, it is unlikely to match equity returns during short-term market rallies, although it should not lag by much.

Our Opinion

With a target of cash plus 3-5% p.a. over a market cycle and a big focus on delivering this via a risk-controlled framework, this fund has more than achieved its target since launch. The strong research capabilities of the team and their experience make this a strong consideration for a multi-asset fund.
